Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most frequent and dangerous problems in modern society nowadays. Therefore, it is very difficult to take immediate measures without real time electrocardiogram information. Unfortunately ECG signals, during their acquisition process, are affected by various types of noise and artifacts. This paper presents a diagnostic method which is based on time-frequency features of the ECG signals to classify four types of electrocardiograms (ECG): normal case, or one of the following three types of arrhythmias VCouplet, VTachy, VBigeminy. The proposed diagnostic method uses features which are computed based on Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and then projected onto a lower dimensional feature space using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The DCT coefficients serve as a feature vector; this feature vector is used as an input for a feed forward neural network (FFNN). The proposed method was tested using real ECG signals from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The proposed method showed good results, assuring a good classification with 100% for the normal case and more than 90% well classified signals for the other type of ECG arrhythmias.

Abstract: A pilot study was carried out on soil from toll gate area in Ibadan, Oyo state western Nigeria, contaminated with hydrocarbon (lubricating oil) by artificial simulation to determine the attendant effect associated with the soil physicochemical properties and microbiological composition. Biodegradation of the contaminant using soil microbes and the kinetics of such process was also investigated. Soil parameters such as pH, conductivity, total organic hydrogen, total nitrogen and phosphorus and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) were characterized using standard analytical methods. Trend in growth phase of soil heterotrophic and hydrocarbon utilizing microbes were investigated. Hydrocarbon contamination was seen to affect certain soil properties as a reduction in pH, conductivity, total phosphorus and heterotrophic microbial population was observed. The rate of microbial degradation was found to be dependent on pH and nutrient source. Effective degradation and increased microbial growth occurred between pH 5.3 and 7.2 but recorded reduced microbial growth and rate at much higher pH, thereby defining a suitable pH condition for the process.

ABSTRACT: The gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants are one of the important parasitic diseases that obviously result in reduced productivity. A cross-sectional study was carried out from November 2015 to April 2016 to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal nematode infestation by faecal examination of 384 small ruminants selected from five different sites in and around Ambo town of central Oromia, Ethiopia. The overall infection rate was 49.2% (189). Among the samples 49.8% (135) from sheep and 47.8% (54) from goats were detected positive for gastrointestinal nematode parasites. The sex wise prevalence was 52.9 and 47.9% in male and female animals, respectively while 52.5 and 48.4% in young and adult animals were found positive, respectively. Body condition score infection rate was 73.6, 37 and 26% in poor, medium and good body conditions, respectively. Coprological investigation revealed that sheep and goats in the district were infested by a variety of helminth nematodes. Strongyles were the most frequently (39.3%) recovered nematode eggs followed by Nematodirus (2.9%) and Trichuris species (1.6%). Animals with poor body condition were significantly more infected (p < 0.05) than those in medium or good body condition. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in prevalence between sexes, age and different study sites of the subject area. Due to its important health problem and impact on production in the study area, emphasis should be given for the control and prevention of gastrointestinal nematode infection with further studies on species identification and larval ecology.

Abstract: This study was carried out with the aim of examining the seasonal fecundity and developmental characteristics of the eggs of the female narrow-clawed crayfish Astacus leptodactylus from Aras Dam Lake, Western-Azerbaijan, Iran. Ovarian and pleopodal fecundity, egg diameter and egg weight were measured in a total of 45 mature size females on November 2011 and January 2012. A positive correlation was found between both ovarian and pleopodal fecundity and female size. The mean value of ovarian eggs was (206.55). Pleopodal fecundity was 37.3% lower than ovarian fecundity. The value of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females’ sampled on November was 13.53% (11.63 - 15.91%). The average size of pleopodal eggs was 2.2 mm (1.07 - 6.59 mm). The number of eggs attached to 3rd and 4th pairs of pleopods was significantly higher than other pleopods. The egg number and gonadosomatic index increased significantly with female size.
